Samsung could be tapping into a brand-new segment of wearables with an upcoming smart ring option. The report comes from the English-language publication, The Elec, which has widely covered moves by various South Korean conglomerates. There have previously been indications of the Galaxy Ring device thanks to trademarks filed by the company.
Samsung Galaxy Ring is in development with a Japanese technology firm
The source reports that the Japanese R&D and tech company, Meiko, is currently developing PCB for the upcoming device. These printed circuit boards are essential components based on which the overall design and functionality of the device are decided. The smart ring is expected to contain various health sensors such as ECG and PPG, as per Samsung trademarks, which will also provide more accurate information as compared to a smartwatch.
However, there are no indications of a launch just yet. Samsung’s SmartThings app recently added support for smart rings but it could simply be for products from partner brands. A popular brand in this segment is Finland-based Oura, whose latest model, the Ring 3, costs $299 in the US and comes with functionalities such as 24/7 activity sensors and 7-day battery life.
Samsung trademarks multiple product names
The brand also trademarked various monikers relating to its wearable range. These include Galaxy Circle, Pulse, Index, Insight, and Rhythm. It would not be surprising if the end product uses one of these monikers.
In its home country, both Galaxy Glasses and Galaxy Ring trademarks were spotted pointing towards the launch of an extended reality headset. However, the plans may have been delayed and the unveiling could be set for next year now because of Samsung’s increasing worries regarding the headset’s display quality.
It would not be wise for Samsung fans to not anticipate this product just yet thanks to it being in early development stages. What they can indeed look forward to is the new generation of Galaxy Watch 6 series models, which includes the return of the fan-favourite rotating bezel on the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic. You can tune in to the Galaxy Unpacked event on July 26th.
