The Chandrayaan 3 launch will be live-streamed on National Geographic Channel and Disney+ Hotstar too. The stream starts at 4 PM ahead of the actual landing.

For the unaware, Chandrayaan-3 was launched on July 14th into the space Second Launch Pad, SDSC-SHAR, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh India. This is India’s third lunar mission, which will attempt to place a lander, named Vikram, and a rover called Pragyaan on the lunar surface and operate them for roughly one lunar day, or 14 Earth days.

“India’s pursuit of space exploration reaches a remarkable milestone with the impending Chandrayaan-3 Mission, poised to achieve a soft landing on the lunar surface,” ISRO said in a statement.

5 things you should know about Chandrayaan-3

As ISRO’s former director, K Sivan and its current Chairman S Somanath highlight, this mission has learned from past setbacks and has incorporated corrective measures to make the Chandrayaan-3 not only stronger but also successful at landing on the moon.

Here’s how important this mission is and everything else that you ought to know about it:

  • Chandrayaan-3 took off on July 14th 2023. In other words, the mission started.
  • It took about 40 days for the Indian lunar spacecraft to reach close to the moon’s surface. Chandrayaan-3 took this much time primarily because the ISRO spacecraft isn’t as strong as its US counterpart (even though it’s said to be more durable than the Chandrayaan-2). The good thing, however, is that the agency uses this time to calibrate the trajectory and spacecraft’s movements.
  • Chandrayaan-3 is also cost-effective for ISRO, thanks to clever slingshot manoeuvres and a series of controlled and incremental engine burns to correct the trajectory and velocity.
  • The mission, this time around, is not just to land but to use the Pragyaan rover to explore and collect data about the geology and history of the moon. This would involve drilling down the ground and gathering samples to check mineral composition, seismic activity, and even atmospheric conditions. These factors and photos of Earth from the moon will be used to analyze the chances of man’s life on the moon.
  • That’s a grand mission and once it lands, India will become the fourth nation to achieve such a feat after the United States, Russia, and China.
Update: The Chandrayaan 3 launch will be live-streamed on National Geographic Channel and Disney+ Hotstar at 4 PM today.
