Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 series is creating the usual noise ahead of its launch in Cupertino tomorrow, but most of it is attributed to the rumoured (all but confirmed) presence of the USB Type-C port in the models. Apple is reportedly instructing its employees in its Apple Stores worldwide to specifically tell customers to purchase the USB Type-C power adapter and additional cables as the Type-C to Lightning cables would no longer work with the new models.
Apple has two stores in India – in Mumbai and Delhi – which became operational in April this year. All models of the iPhone 15 series – namely the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max/Ultra – will be up for sale along with their accessories. Rumour has it that Apple has customised its USB Type-C cables to match the iPhone 15 colour options.
iPhone 15’s USB-C port
It may not be wrong to say that Apple has been compelled to adopt the USB Type-C port, after EU regulations required all smartphones being sold in the region to have the universal charging standard. The Lightning port has been present on iPhones for over 10 years, even as MacBooks shifted to Type-C in 2015 and iPads in 2018. Reports say that Apple may have continued with the Lightning port had EU, and subsequently Indian, compliance regulations not come into play.
The change is expected to give a significant bump to iPhone charging speeds, which are really not revealed officially by Apple. Tipsters say some of the iPhone 15 models may have charging speeds up to 35W, up from the current 27W. Data transfer speeds will also increase, with the Pro models tipped to the super-fast Thunderbolt.
Even as iPhones will become universally chargeable, Apple does not particularly stand to lose, as Apple’s salesforce will emphasise that the smartphones should only be charged with the company’s exclusive 20W USB Type-C power adapters. Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple increased its Q3 supply forecast for the adapters by 120 percent, and pegged it at 70 million units for Q4. Industry estimates say Apple’s 20W USB-C charger shipments in 2023 are expected to be around 230 million units, which would be an year-on-year growth of almost 40 percent.
