The new iPhone 15 Pro has been at the centre of many user-related issues, from overheating to start-up lags and even durability, despite a titanium build this year. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is the first iPhone in nearly 10 years to fail the famous JerryRigEverything durability test, and now it’s turn for the drop test. This time, the iPhone 15 Pro Max goes up against the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Check out the results.

  • The new drop test comes from PhoneBuff, who performs the test using machines in a controlled manner.
  • The drop tests of the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra are performed from the same distance and the phones are dropped onto the same materials.
  • The two flagships went through four rounds of drops, including a backdrop, corner drop, face drop and a bonus round with it dropping onto the steel.

Results

While the results were relatively close, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra took less damage than the iPhone 15 Pro Max in three of the four rounds. The Samsung flagship scored 39 points out of 40, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max earned 37 points. This year, Samsung seems to be having an edge over the iPhones, in terms of build quality at least.

The back and front glass of the iPhone 15 Pro Max cracked on the first drop while the titanium frame was more resilient during the corner drop than the aluminium chassis of the S23 Ultra.

However, despite having the back and front glass broken, the iPhone 15 Pro Max was fully operational, including the camera, but so was the Samsung flagship. The titanium iPhone 15 Pro Max witnessed more damage compared to predecessor iPhones that have steel frames.

The only advantage of the new iPhones with the titanium frame seems to be the cheaper cost of repairs for broken glass, in comparison to the iPhone 14 Pro lineup.
