Hands-on with Vivo X100 Pro’s ZEISS Multi-Focal Portraits, Telephoto Sunshot, and more

Vivo is gearing up to launch the Vivo X100 series in India and the brand is busy highlighting the various photography-centric features on its newest flagship phones. There’s a good reason behind it too: the Vivo X100 and X100 Pro come loaded with tons of interesting and unique camera features, backed by ZEISS. Vivo took 91mobiles to Hong Kong to try out the cameras on the Vivo X100 Pro, and one camera feature in particular seems worth highlighting: ZEISS Multi-Focal Portraits.

A little about the Vivo X100 Pro’s cameras

Before discussing the portrait feature, let’s take a quick look at the cameras on the Vivo X100 Pro. You get three 50MP sensors on the back for consistency. The main 1-inch ZEISS camera uses Sony’s IMX989 sensor with Zeiss T* coating. The second is a ZEISS APPO FLoating Periscope camera capable of 4.3x optical zoom and up to 100x digital zoom levels. Lastly, the 50MP ultra-wide angle lens has a 119-degree field of view. At the front, you get a 32MP sensor for selfies.

ZEISS Multi-Focal Portrait

Let’s talk about one of the main attractions of the Vivo X100 Pro: the Multi-Focal Portrait mode. The X100 Pro lets you capture portrait shots at various focal lengths with just a tap of the button. You get focal lengths of 24mm (1x), 35mm (1.5x), 50mm (2.2x), 85mm (3.7x), and 100m (4.3x) to ensure you have the right frame for every portrait shot.

In addition to these focal lengths, Vivo has collaborated with ZEISS to offer unique ZEISS-style portraits like Distagon, B-Speed, Biotar, Planar, Cinematic, and B-speed. By combining both the focal lengths and ZEISS Portrait styles, Vivo promises you’ll be able to get the right portrait shot any time of the day. We put this to the test in the streets of Hong Kong.

While we’ll reserve our judgment on the images for our review, you can see some of the ways the ZEISS-style portraits can be used under various conditions. The various ZEISS portrait styles essentially allow you to play around with different background bokeh effects, while the ability to switch between focal lengths quickly enables you to capture the right dramatic shot so that the moment doesn’t pass. One of the newer styles, the ZEISS B-speed cine lens, creates a triangular-shaped bokeh effect.

Multi-focal portraits aside, the Vivo X100 Pro’s cameras are capable of features like Telephoto Sunshot, which uses hardware and software to capture attractive sunrise and sunset shots. The telephoto lens also comes into play for macro photography, 4K Cinematic Portrait Video, and extreme zoom captures up to 100x.

These are just some of the images we captured using the Vivo X100 Pro’s ZEISS camera system. We’ll have more to share in our detailed review once the phone goes official in India tomorrow i.e. January 4th. We will also know more about the Vivo X100 series’ prices and availability details during the launch event.
